The press release from Fraunhofer IGD, dated March 16, 2023, discusses the PERCEIVE project, funded by the EU, which focuses on reconstructing the original colors of ancient artworks using AI technology. This project aims to enhance the perception, exhibition, and study of these works, helping to simulate how artworks like ancient Greek sculptures and Victorian textiles originally looked and how they will appear in the future. The AI technology being developed will automate the process of material reconstruction and predict color changes due to light exposure over time. This initiative is expected to aid both digital remodeling and physical restoration of artifacts, with tools becoming available to museums and researchers within three years.
