Evaluate the Autochrome Demonstrator here

The Autochrome Demonstrator presents an innovative approach to photo restoration by deconstructing and reimagining the layers of Autochrome photographs. The device separates an Autochrome’s key components – the colored starch mosaic and the black-and-white panchromatic emulsion – into distinct physical layers that viewers can examine individually or as a complete image. When viewing from the front through an occulator, these layers merge to create the full photograph, while side views reveal the individual components.

For damaged Autochromes, the system incorporates AI-generated elements to reconstruct missing portions of the emulsion layer while clearly distinguishing between original and restored areas. The demonstrator also features an interchangeable color mosaic created with spectral image-processing techniques that can replace faded original mosaics, allowing viewers to experience the photograph’s likely original colors. This non-invasive method preserves the integrity of the original while showcasing how modern technology can thoughtfully augment historical photographic processes.
