Archaeological museums often house collections of statues and architectural elements that were originally colored. Unfortunately, only microscopic traces of these colours remain, and what is left requires\u00a0careful preservation.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p class=\"custom-font\">While a complete reconstruction\u00a0of their original appearance is challenging, institutions believe it is crucial to offer a correct understanding. This helps to train visitors&#8217; eyes to recognize the original polychromy, preventing misunderstandings. The reliability of digital reconstructions and the authenticity of the resulting digital experiences are crucial. The process of reconstructing lost polychromy is a complex, interdisciplinary endeavour\u00a0that combines a wide range of analytical techniques with historical and archaeological\u00a0research. This integrated approach ensures that\u00a0the hypothetical reconstructions are not speculative but are grounded in tangible evidence.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p class=\"custom-font\">Despite the lack of a common protocol for investigating and preserving ancient polychromy, the PERCEIVE project aims to develop a shared methodology\u00a0that uses Image Processing Methods (IBM) and Machine Learning approaches (AI) to significantly accelerate the study of colour\u00a0traces on ancient artifacts.\r\nThe aim\u00a0is to obtain, when possible, reliable reconstruction\u00a0hypotheses\u00a0of the original polychromy\u00a0and, when data are not sufficient, to communicate to the general public, the scientific process behind the study of residual polychromy. The twofold goals are to train visitors&#8217; eyes to recognize these subtle colour\u00a0remnants, enhancing their knowledge and understanding of ancient art. By fostering a sense of wonder for these artworks, the aim is\u00a0to instil\u00a0a sense of care and civic responsibility, all while upholding the authenticity of the original collections and the class=\"custom-font\">Today, there is a strong need to extend civic participation beyond the museum walls. By developing a new Open Museum concept, we aim to involve citizens in the discovery process, with access to information from home and on the street. This approach seeks\u00a0to make the study of ancient art more accessible and engaging for everyone.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<h4>Case Studies<\/h4>\r\n<p class=\"custom-font\">Two case studies belonging to the MANN collection have been selected:<\/p>\r\n<div class=\"cards-container container-1\">\r\n\r\n<div class=\"card-item\">\r\n<div class=\"card\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/perceive-horizon.eu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/08\/MICROSCOPY_Anadyomene-Venus-scaled.jpg\" alt=\"Venus\" \/>\r\n<div class=\"card-content\">\r\n<h6>Venus Anadyomene<\/h6>\r\n<p class=\"custom-font\">A group of marble statues representing\u00a0the famous iconography of \u201cVenus Anadyomene\u201d (from Greek, \u201cVenus Rising from the Sea\u201d), the Goddess of love, has been selected as case study. The theme of feminine goddess allows\u00a0us to consider additional\u00a0statues whose\u202fpolychromy is very well preserved, such as NR 109608 Lovatelli\u00a0Venus and NR 152798 Bikini Venus.<\/p>\r\n<\/div>\r\n<\/div>\r\n<\/div>\r\n\r\n<div class=\"card-item\">\r\n<div class=\"card\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/perceive-horizon.eu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/06\/photo_2024-06-11_15-42-03.jpg\" alt=\"Iseum\" \/>\r\n<div class=\"card-content\">\r\n<h6>Isis Complex in Pompeii<\/h6>\r\n<p class=\"custom-font\">This complex, whose reconstruction would be carried out through the relief of architectural structures but also through the virtual replacement of fragments of frescos that decorated the walls of the temple and of statues excavated in the Temple and currently exhibited\u00a0in the MANN collection.
